Don’t Click “Fix Now”: Avoiding Fake Tech Support Pop-Ups

Technology can be confusing, and scammers use that confusion to their advantage. Tech support scams trick people into paying for fake computer repairs or granting access to their devices.

How the Scam Works

You’re online when suddenly a pop-up fills your screen: “Your computer is infected! Call Microsoft support immediately.” It looks real - complete with logos, warnings, and a loud alarm. When you call the number, a “technician” convinces you to install software that gives them remote access. From there, they can steal information, install malware, or charge you for bogus repairs.

Why It’s Effective

These scams prey on fear. The pop-ups are designed to freeze your computer temporarily, adding to the urgency. Victims often pay hundreds of dollars for unnecessary services or lose personal data without realizing it.

Protecting Yourself

If you see one of these pop-ups, don’t call the number and don’t click any buttons. Close your browser or restart your computer. Legitimate tech companies will never display messages or call you about issues out of the blue.

Keep your antivirus software up to date, and if you think your device may have been compromised, contact a trusted local technician or your bank immediately.

A few moments of caution can save you from a costly, stressful experience.
